This burger is inspired by the great Italian Calzone Pizza. Instead of filling it with various sausages or other filling, I fill it with a cheese burger. I personally don’t think it can’t get much better than this.
So you have to make a few pizzas, a large burger and then sandwich the burger in between the pizzas.
Follow these instructions and you are on you way to a great pizza-burger. I make my dough and tomato sauce myself, but you can always buy everything in the grocery store.
The tomato sauce can be made using my recipe for ketchup and just reduce the sauce until thick without adding any spices.
You can change this burger up by adding BBQ sauce instead of tomato sauce or add lettuce, tomatoes and onion rings.
Makes 4 burgers
Ingredients
14 oz of pizza dough
12 oz of tomato sauce (or one can)
16 oz of fresh mozzarella cheese (or shredded)
5 cloves of garlic, minced
1 cup of fresh basil, roughly chopped
2 tbsp of liquid smoke (optional)
1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese
2 lbs of ground chuck (80% lean)
4 slices of American cheese
Instructions
- Shape two pizzas 12 inch or so in diameter
- Mix tomato sauce, garlic, liquid smoke and basil under medium heat for a few minutes
- Add sauce to pizza in a thin layer
- Add mozzarella cheese to both pizzas
- Finish each pizza off with the Parmesan cheese
- Bake in 450F degree oven for 15 minutes until the cheese is melted and the crust is crisp and golden brown
- While the pizza is cooking shape one 12 inch burger
- Cook to your liking in non-stick skillet 4 minutes on each side for medium. Flip burger and add cheese. Cook for 3-4 more minutes covered so the cheese can melt
- Take the pizzas out of the oven and let rest for a few minutes
- Place the burger on one pizza and turn the other pizza around on top of the burger to close it
- Cut in 4 equal wedges
Serve right away. Enjoy.
