Homemade French Fries

If you like to make your own burgers and always wondered how to make the perfect fries with the burger this is something for you.

Fries you get in the supermarket has been prepared in advance and frozen. They do however not taste as good as freshly homemade ones.

Regular and Sweet Potato Fries

To make fries you need to get some nice Idaho Russet potatoes (or Sweet Potato Fries) from your favorite grocery. You decide if you want to peel them, but they need to be washed before you start.

Cut the potatoes in 5/8 inch thick fries, or get a fries cutting machine.

Once cut, rinse the fries in ice-cold water until the water runs clear. This is an important step so don’t miss it!

You also need a deep fryer. You can get away using a deep pan, wok or similar, but it is just unsafe and difficult to manage the temperature. I recommend getting a deep fryer. I have one that has a nice filter that will let you reuse the oil 10 times or more.

Deep Fryer

In order to make fries you have to cook them in two steps: First you need to boil them in warm oil (325 F) for 6-7 minutes. Then you can let them cool and freeze them if you like, or you can continue doing the next step, which is frying them in hot oil (425 F) for an additional 2-3 minutes.

Deep Frying
You might think you can save time doing it all in one batch at 425 F but trust me, it won’t work.

The fries to the left got 2 minutes at the final stage and the fries on the right got 3 minutes.

Fries

If you have the time, experiment with a few fries before making the entire batch. Sprinkle salt on them and enjoy!
