Kincaid’s is an award winning burger establishment in Ft. Worth since 1946. It has been featured in the book “Hamburger America” by George Mott as “a must on the burger trail of America” and is probably one of the best known burger places in the United States. It has already been reviewed by FatTriGuy in his review on Feb 7, 2010 (see review here) but since I am the Burger Doctor I had to check the place out myself so I could make my own objective evaluation of Kincaid’s.
Kincaid’s was established back on September 5, 1946 as a grocery and meat market by Charles Kincaid. In order to use up excess meat from the market they started cooking burgers around 1966 and over the years words spread around Ft. Worth how good these burgers were. Articles began to be written, local television station began to feature Kincaid’s burgers and now they are consistently chosen as the “best burger” in the city and county.
All burgers are made from all natural USDA choice boneless chuck. The beef is handmade into patties of 8 oz each and cooked on their large hamburger grill in the store. If you like to read more about the history of Kincaid’s please refer to their website here.
When I arrived at the restaurant I could tell this was a different kind of burger place than I normally go to. It was kept in the old fashioned style and walking into the restaurant you instantly felt like you were in a special place. Behind the benches that met you when you walked in there were three lines of high table rows from were you could enjoy your hamburgers standing. It looked to me like they kept this from when they started selling hamburgers back in the sixties and it was very authentic. One wall was decorated with memorabilia collected from the restaurant over time and the other wall was covered with newspaper articles about Kincaid’s and awards received over the years. It was like walking back in time and truly a unique experience you never could have at all the new hamburger places that keep popping up everywhere.
The restaurant was large considering the humble appearance from the outside. I would guess it could seat (and stand) at least 100 people but this was right after they opened at 11 AM, so there were very few in the restaurant. The signs where the menu was posted on looked like it was the original signs from the sixties. Everything seemed original and following the concept that once you make something good, don’t mess with it.
I was recommended to get the Bacon Cheese burger and I ordered mine medium and with a side a fries and drink. The wait was less than 10 minutes and the burgers came in takeout bags so you could bring them on the road or enjoy them inside the restaurant.
The burgers looked very good and the fries were the wrinkle type fries. I am certain the fries were cooked from frozen which is perfectly fine with me. The burger was very good. I am uncertain if they season the burger at all, my guess is that they don’t. The meat was juicy even though they cooked mine medium well. You can tell this is a good quality meat and it tasted very good. I didn’t get any taste impression from the grill though which I personally prefer, but the meat was speaking for itself in this burger. The bacon was very good and made a good addition to the burger. The burger was very solid and clean and by clean I mean there were no fancy ingredients other than meat, cheese and a few greens. The bun was firm and consistent with the entire burger. I can understand why so many like Kincaid’s and rate it one of the best burgers out there.
In my opinion it was not my favorite burger for a few reasons: First, the grill added no taste to the burger. I really enjoy a burger grilled on a real grill and not on a griddle like they used at Kincaid’s. A griddle add almost no flavor to the burger and I admit that it could be an advantage but I just like the grilled taste better. Some places have a wood fired grill which adds even more flavor which I also happen to like. Second, the bacon was not good enough for a high quality place like this. Don’t get me wrong, it was very good but having tried the bacon at Wingfield’s (see review here) this was just not in the league it could be.
The fries were cooked from frozen and I am all for that if you can’t make them from fresh (which is tougher than you think). I like that Kincaid’s focus was on the burger and not on the fries. Why try to make fries from scratch if you are a meat place? I think it makes perfect sense for Kincaid’s to focus entirely on the meat and the burger.
My final conclusion from my visit is that Kincaid’s is a burger establishment you have to visit if you are a burger lover. As a Burger Doctor I truly love places that are 100% dedicated to meat burgers and Kincaid’s is one of those establishments. The atmosphere in this place is the best I have ever been in. It oozes “Burger” and that’s the feeling you want when you visit a burger place. The burgers are solid and even though my preference is for the grilled burgers I must admit Kincaid’s makes a great burger.
I will rate this burger as a solid 8.5 out of 10. I still think Wingfield’s (link) is a notch up from Kincaid’s. The atmosphere is an almost unbeatable 9 out of 10.
