Okay this was the most memorable place I have ever had a hamburger at. First, this is a grocery, but they have no groceries. Only hamburgers. Second, this was a hang out for New Hope citizens and I suspect many of them are quite old because this place has been around since the 1950′s. Third, the decorations (or lack thereof) made this such a funny experience that I would almost recommend the place based on that alone without even tasting their burgers.
This place oozed atmosphere and they served their famous Dunn Burger in different sizes. They did have a few sandwiches also, but the main attraction was their Dun Burger. We arrived around 11:30 and the owners were sitting at one of the tables in the grocery hanging out with locals. There was nothing ordinary about this place. There was even a table that was reserved and there were really no customers in here yet. Priceless.
I ordered their Dunn Burger in the half pound version with jalapenos and cheese along side with a serving of fries. The lady (Mrs. Dunn) was taking the order while Mr. Dunn ran the kitchen. Mr. Dunn was sitting in his chair in the kitchen by the griddle shaping and flipping burgers. At least the meat was made from fresh ground beef. We had to grab our drinks from the fridges located at the bottom of the store. There was no fancy soda fountain, just a regular but old fridge.
We triggered the kitchen to open and people started showing up. New Hope is a small town (population 521) but the parking lot was soon pretty full as patrons arrived for their burger. An elderly lady chatted with us and she had been coming here since the 1950′s having a burger on a regular basis. She even wrote a poem for the Grocery that was framed in the store.
The burgers took a while to arrive. I guess the start up of the kitchen had something to do with that. Mrs. Dunn brought the burgers to our table.
The burgers were traditional but solid burgers. No fancy condiments or cheeses. This was an all American burger made with love and heart for 50 years. And I could tell. The burger was cooked perfectly medium well and I could definitely taste that the meat was made from fresh. You can’t really make a traditional burger any better than this using a griddle. It was a great burger with a good taste.
The fries were made from frozen and they were nice and crisp. The local lady from before asked how we liked their fries and we said they were good. She mentioned that Mr. Dunn was very secretive about how he made them so crisp and I was not going to tell her that he probably just bought them from a store and fried them according to the instructions on the bag.
You absolutely have to visit this place. The entire experience was fantastic. Their burgers are very good and being a traditional burger they don’t get much better than this. You have to get into the fancy burger category to get them better.
They are only open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 am to 8:30 pm. They do accept credit cards.
