Square Burger is a trendy new burger restaurant in downtown McKinney, Texas. They are serving burgers made from grass-fed beef, but they also carry burgers made with lamb, turkey and salmon. The beef is supplied by McKinney-based Genesis Beef and delivered daily to the restaurant. Their buns are Brioche and are made by Empire Bakery. All ingredients like greens etc are all locally grown.
Square Burger is not making burgers that are square. The name comes from their location at the McKinney central square. They have 30 different beers on tap and an extensive wine list as well. It is a full service restaurant with waitstaff and a very impressive bar.
The first thing I noticed from the outside was the lack of signage. The only thing that indicated this was a burger restaurant was a subtle image of a burger on their entrance. Maybe they will get a sign later or it is part of their trendy look. The restaurant was tastefully decorated and everything was very trendy and contemporary inside.
We were a party of four and we were here for their burgers! Their burger menu was short but had some great burger combinations (see pictures). We ordered the following burgers: Bacon and Smoked Cheddar BBQ Burger, Smokey Jack Burger, High Society Burger and finally the Mushroom-Border Burger. As sides we ordered regular french fries and sweet potato fries. Each order of fries were $4.
I asked the waiter about several things and here is the rundown: They cut their own fries and make them from scratch. The beef is grass-fed and all natural. They cook burgers to order, but unless you say something they will cook it to medium. Perfect!
For a new place it filled up pretty good and the restaurant was probably half full. Very good for a new burger place!
The wait was long, maybe 20 minutes. The burgers came on nice plates and looked very impressive (almost artistic). The fries were served in nice bowls and a order of fries was huge!
I tried the BBQ burger and the Smokey Jack. All burgers were cooked perfectly to medium. Normally when I order them medium at other places, they cooked them well-done, but this was 100% medium. The meat was well seasoned and had a wonderful taste. Both burgers I tried were absolutely delicious. The best one was the BBQ burger. Even though the BBQ sauce was very subtle, the burger was to die for. The greens was fresh and the crispy fried onions in the burger was just cooked to perfection. Even though I didn’t try all the burgers we ordered everyone in our party thought their burgers were great.
On 7/19/10 I also tried the Smoked Salmon burger. It was such a pretty burger decorated with salmon roe and served with a dill dressing. Absolutely delicious!
On 9/17/10 I tried their Lamb burger. I am not a big fan of lamb but the gamy taste was subtle but still there. If you like lamb I am sure you will find it delicious!
The french fries were okay, but not great. Cooking fries from scratch is just not that easy. They had a good taste but they were just not crisp enough fro my taste. It was a whole other story with the sweet potato fries. They were probably the best I have ever tasted. They managed to get the crisp which is almost impossible with sweet potato fries, because of the high sugar content. But the chef managed the impossible. They were delightful! You can’t make them any better than that! Some cinnamon was added to the fries, which I am not a big fan of, but I will not let that change my rating in these fries. This was a 10 out of 10 sweet potato fry!
Square burger is not a fast food style place. It is a sit down and dine place where you take your time and enjoy the food and maybe have a glass of wine or a beer. It is upscale burger dining and the price is also upscale. $64 for four people with tax and tips or $16 per person is high end pricing for a burger place in Texas, but I think it is worth it. I definitely recommend Square Burger for their burgers and especially their sweet potato fries. Good work Square Burger. I will be back soon!
